Halmpiller er den perfekte erstatning til naturlig halm som strøelse til heste og andre dyr. Halmpillerne er både nemmere at håndtere og transportere. Derudover har de næsten de samme egenskaber som naturligt halm og fremstilles uden tilsætningsstoffer. De er specielt gode til at binde ammoniak og forbedrer staldmiljøet betydeligt. Halmpillerne danner desuden en god og fjedrende madras i hesteboksen.
Halmpiller produceres på lignende måde som træpiller. De er produceret af hvedehalm, som er snittet og presset til piller. Den høje temperatur som opstår under produktionen dræber eventuelle bakterier, toksiner eller sporer. Dette gør dem også velegnet til heste med allergi.
Det gennemsnitlige forbrug af halmpiller på en hesteboks på 10m2 ligger på cirka 1300-1500 kg per år. Det svarer til en mængde på cirka 120 kg per måned, som kan holde boksen rent 2 til 6 uger. En typisk mængde for opstart af en ny hesteboks med halmpiller vil ca. ligge på 200 kg.
Halmpiller kan suge 3 – 3,5 Liter vand per kilogram, som er mere end de fleste andre konventionelle størrelser. Dette svarer til en sugeevne på 5-6 gange deres egen vægt. Halmpiller varmer bunden op nedefra, hvilket giver den gode effekt at den er selv tørrende, ved et jævnt lag i hele boksen, på 15-20 cm. Så mens hesten går på marken, tørrer boksen stille toplaget.
Halmpillerne bruges af mange professionelle topryttere som også opdrættere og private hesteejere, som er begejstret for produktet, da det ikke støver og har en meget højere sugeevne end andre konventionelle størrelser.
Udover alle de overnævnte fordele, har man også fordelen af at mindske sin mødding gevaldigt. Der er mange bioanlæg der modtager mødding til afbrænding.
